In his new installation, Rising, Tuomas Laitinen (b. 1976) examines his own relationship to
space and memory. A parallel theme is energy production.
Rising in the Kunsthalle Studio is the first part of a series of works about the future, memory and energy production. It is a dream-like work with elements from the genres of horror and science fiction. It is a layered piece that presents the artist’s personal relationship to space and memory along with more general reflections upon the consequences of energy production. Rising oscillates between narrativity and an abstract, psychedelic idiom.
Tuomas Laitinen graduated from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in 2008. His work has in recent years been exhibited in numerous venues, including the collection exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai, the Riga Art Space, an invitational exhibition of the Paulo Foundation, the Korjaamo Gallery in Helsinki, Göteborgs Konsthall in Sweden, and Gallery Visningsrommet at the culture house USF in Bergen.
Another version of Rising will be presented in Shanghai at the Art+Shanghai Gallery in January 2011.
The production of the work is supported by AVEK – The Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture, the Alfred Kordelin Foundation and YIT/Heikki K. Hannukkala.
