Timo Wright, Self-Portrait, 2010
An average Finnish family owns more than 10,000 objects. I personally own about 3,500 objects. Objects I have NEEDED. I have needed just this pair of shoes, I have needed just those trousers. Although, ultimately, it is only a matter of wanting, not needing. I can't need all of these things, really, can I?!
Timo Wright’s Self-Portrait has consumption and ecology as its main themes. We consume too much, everybody knows that. The current situation is untenable. We know that too. Yet in spite of it all, driven by our caveman instincts, we collect and hoard everything we can lay our hands upon. Buying gives pleasure, but the moment the thing is purchased, it becomes worthless trash.
Self-Portrait is a photographic project in which I photograph EVERY OBJECT that I own. Every spoon, every vinyl record, every sock, every pen. Every single object.
The work will be a giant collage that illustrates the madness of our consumption habits. On the other hand, it will also be a revealing encounter: how do I construct myself through my consumption, what do the things I own say about me?
After the Kunsthalle, the exhibition will be shown in the Northern Photographic Centre (in Oulu, Finland) from 21 May to 20 June 2010.
The exhibition is supported by SUOMEN KULTTUURIRAHASTO (The Finnish Cultural Foundation). Thanks are due to the following partners: EIRIKUVA and NIKON.
